About the Role

As a Generation Systems Engineer II / III / Senior - Steam Turbines, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our energy systems. Responsibilities

  • Perform technical assessments and economic evaluations of generation systems to inform long-range planning and decision-making.
  • Apply advanced engineering principles to support the design and optimization of generation infrastructure projects.
  • Provide guidance and oversight on engineering tasks, supporting project execution from concept through implementation.
  • Analyze operational and performance data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for system improvement.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders, including planning, operations, and finance, to align engineering outputs with business goals.
  • Offer technical support and direction to junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
  • Take ownership of engineering interpretations and recommendations, making informed decisions that support organizational strategy.
  • Prepare engineering plans, designs, analysis, specifications, cost estimates, evaluations, studies, technical reviews, investigations, and verifications.
  • Ensure compliance with design, regulatory, operating, and maintenance requirements.
  • Review and check analysis, evaluations, and investigations of others to ensure technical soundness, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Interface with customers and other departments to ensure project objectives are understood and work scope meets customer requirements, budget, and schedule.
  • Present the results of designs, studies, projects, or approaches to subordinates, colleagues, management, and customers.
  • Enhance department performance and productivity by formulating, coordinating, performing analysis, and making recommendations for improvements.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to department personnel to enhance performance and productivity.
  • May provide oversight of engineering technical programs, including managing program requirements, working with cross-organizational partners, reviewing operating experience, and coordinating corrective actions.
  • May assume responsibility for small- to medium-scale projects, including planning, designing, scheduling, and coordinating all facets of the project.
  • Identify potential schedule or quality problems and initiate corrective action.
  • Take initiative to eliminate barriers and use resources to ensure desired results.
  • May interface with outside agencies and regulatory authorities.
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to less experienced engineers.
  • May participate in developing long-range strategies for significant site problems.
  • Provide input to projects and recommend modifications to increase operating efficiency.
  • Review design and documentation of projects to ensure compliance with design specifications, schedules, and regulatory requirements.
  • Remain cognizant of current technology and engineering developments as well as industry and competitive developments.

Requirements

  • Generation Systems Engineer II - Steam Turbines:
    • A four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution, or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) institution.
    • Two (2) years of experience in Engineering-related positions.
    • Engineering degree must be from an accredited College of Engineering Program.
    • A relevant Master’s degree in Engineering may substitute for one (1) year of required experience.
  • Generation Systems Engineer III - Steam Turbines:
    • A four-year bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline from an ABET-accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution, or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) institution.
    • Five (5) years of working experience in Engineering-related positions.
  • Generation Systems Engineer Senior - Steam Turbines:
    • A four-year bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline from an ABET-accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution, or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) institution.
    • Eight (8) years of working experience in Engineering-related positions.

Approved degrees include: Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Math, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Architectural, Structural. A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering; a review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by Engineering department management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Problem analysis and resolution techniques.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, practices, methods, and safety standards in the area of the applicable engineering discipline.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

Schedule

Hybrid: Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person). Hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location. Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees). Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic setup. Role types are subject to change based on business need.
