Examples of Duties
- Works independently or as part of a work crew in installation, maintenance and repair activities in the management and care of County infrastructure and properties.
- Operates heavy vehicles and equipment in the installation, maintenance and repair functions associated with the assigned functional area.
- Operates equipment including back-hoes, loaders, mowers, chippers, sweepers, dozers, draglines, forklifts, graders, stripers, rollers, loaders, trenchers, and heavy equipment/trucks.
- Participates in work-site safety set-up, to include setting barricades and cones, prepping for excavation, assisting with utility locates, prepping for confined space entry, performing traffic control in accordance with uniform work zone safety standards.
- Identifies potential hazards for the general public during installation, maintenance and repair projects; determines appropriate equipment operating procedures accordingly.
- Participates in the restoration of streets, landscapes, grounds, landfill areas and other properties disturbed or altered by service operations.
- Cleans up after work, conducts various incidental tasks to support efficient functioning of the unit, including customer service, general facilities/grounds maintenance.
- Ensures the safe and proper operation of tools, vehicles and equipment; adheres to prescribed safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Inspects completed work for proper operation, adherence to work orders, and safety.
- Functions in a lead worker capacity in the event of absence of a supervisor or as directed.
- Provides training in equipment operations and essential job skills for entry-level and lesser skilled and knowledgeable equipment operations staff.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
- Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
- Over two years and up to and including four years of operating heavy equipment or related experience.
Special Certifications And Licenses
- OSHA Training
- Flagger Certification
- Defensive Driving
- CPR/First Aid Certification
- Commercial Driver’s License (Class A)
Supplemental Information
- All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
