Pay

Hourly pay range: $17.10 – $22.85 (this range represents step 1 to the maximum step for the position under the collective bargaining agreement; starting pay is at step 1).

About the role

The General Merchandise Clerk (GMC) delivers G.O.A.T. (Greet, Observe, Assist, Thank) service to customers. This versatile role supports multiple store areas, including front-end operations, stocking, e-commerce order fulfillment, floral, and cut-fruit preparation.

Responsibilities

• Provide friendly, professional customer service (G.O.A.T.) and assist with questions, product locations, and recommendations
• Bag groceries carefully, separate items properly, and help load groceries into customer vehicles
• Retrieve and organize shopping carts from the parking lot
• Stock and refill shelves, displays, and end caps with general merchandise; follow CAO bread procedures for orders
• Build and maintain product displays according to store planograms and seasonal guidelines
• Bale cardboard and keep the backroom clean, organized, and free of clutter
• Ensure accurate signage, pricing, and routine price changes; maintain clean, safe aisles and displays
• Sweep floors, clean spills, and remove trash to maintain a safe shopping environment
• Fulfill e-commerce orders: locate, inspect, and pack items; report or replace damaged/unavailable items; update customers on delays or substitutions
• Assist customers with order pickup and transport completed orders to their vehicles
• Cut, prepare, package, label, and price fresh-cut produce; stock and rotate merchandise to maintain freshness
• Monitor produce temperatures, storage conditions, and maintain logs of damaged/lost merchandise
• Complete price changes and assist with monthly inventory counts
• Open, price, and stock floral merchandise; maintain neat, attractive displays and remove wilted/damaged products
• Place point-of-sale signs, tags, and promotional materials for floral and GMC produce
• Stock and maintain the salad wall and other GMC produce items
• Operate store equipment (hand trucks, box cutters, department equipment) safely and follow safety protocols
• Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer experience
• Perform all other related duties, including courtesy clerk tasks, as assigned

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• High school diploma preferred but not required
• Valid Food Handler / Health Card
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
• Friendly, customer-focused attitude with strong service orientation
• Ability to work well in a team and follow direction with a positive attitude
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Basic math and reading skills for pricing, labels, equipment, and inventory
• Good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel for 4–8 hours per day and lift up to 50 pounds
• Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Adherence to store policies, safety standards, and collective bargaining agreement
