General Mechanical Technician
About the role
CGI Federal is seeking a General Mechanical Technician to support mechanical installation, integration, testing, maintenance, and repair activities for complex systems and subsystems within the Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) program for the US Army. This role plays a critical part in ensuring mechanical assemblies, structures, and modifications are built correctly, installed safely, and maintained to required performance standards.
Responsibilities
- Mechanical Installation & Modification Plan and perform installation of mechanical components, assemblies, and structural modifications
- Support integration of mechanical subsystems into larger platforms or systems
- Aid engineers with prototype builds, mechanical fit checks, and alignment tasks
- Maintenance, Troubleshooting & Repair
- Conduct preventive maintenance on mechanical and structural components
- Diagnose issues, perform troubleshooting, and repair mechanical systems to restore functionality
- Document maintenance actions and ensure component configurations remain consistent with engineering requirements
- Technical Documentation & Drawings
- Work from engineering drawings, sketches, models, and technical instructions
- Provide feedback to engineers to support drawing updates and design refinements
- Absorb or review of mechanical assembly instructions and work packages
- Assist in development or review of mechanical assembly instructions and work packages
- Assist in mechanical fabrication activities including machining, cutting, drilling, mounting, and assembly
- Use appropriate hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely and correctly
- Support fabrication of brackets, mounts, and structural supports based on engineering requirements
- Testing & Verification
- Perform functional and verification tests on mechanical components and subsystems
- Support environmental, structural, or mechanical testing as required
- Record test results and communicate performance issues to engineering teams
- Field & Integration Support
- Support installation and mechanical work at integration sites, labs, or fielding events
- Cookordinate with engineers, technicians, and program teams during integration activities
- Ensure mechanical work meets safety, quality, and performance standards
Requirements
- Education: AA/AS degree from an accredited college in Engineering or related field, or graduation from a 2 year technical school with certification in a relevant mechanical discipline
- Experience: 4+ years of experience in mechanical design, mechanical fabrication, or mechanical system integration
- Skills: Proficiency using mechanical hand tools, power tools, and fabrication equipment; ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings and mechanical tolerances; understanding of mechanical systems, structural components, fasteners, materials, and hardware; ability to support testing and troubleshooting of mechanical assemblies; work independently or as part of a cross-functional team; comfortable working in lab, shop, and field environments
Qualifications
- Advanced Mechanical Expertise
- Experience working in a defense manufacturing environment
- Familiarity with mechanical modification processes on tactical or fielded systems
- Experience with prototype development or rapid mechanical fabrication
- Tools & Systems Knowledge: Experience with CAD viewers (e.g., SolidWorks eDrawings, Creo View); familiarity with configuration management or work order systems; basic understanding of electrical mechanical interfaces
- Certifications: Industry mechanical technician certifications (e.g., NCCER, ASE Mechanical, NIMS); OSHA or safety certifications relevant to shop or field work
Desired qualifications/non essential skills required
- Ability to support mechanical inventory management and tool control
- Familiarity with torque specifications, mechanical tolerances, and metrology tools
- Experience documenting mechanical issues and updating logs or technical notes
Pay
To support the ability to reward for merit based performance, CGI typically does not hire individuals at or near the top of the range for their role. Compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range for this role in the U.S. is $58,000.00 - $123,800.00.
