General Mechanic - Evenings

About the Role

This position responds to assigned departmental maintenance needs and is responsible for the execution of repairs or replacement of affected equipment in assigned area(s). The role involves responding to and repairing specialty systems, accelerating requests as appropriate to the leader for distribution, and referring requests beyond the scope of the position to the Facilities leader for appropriate distribution.

Responsibilities

• Performs general inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs of minor electrical, mechanical, and plumbing items within the hospital or clinic setting. Examples include unclogging plumbing lines, replacing light bulbs, replacing ceiling tiles, repairing leaking faucets, and painting touch-ups.
• Follows up on completed assignments to ensure equipment is working appropriately.
• Responds to and repairs specialty systems such as nurse call systems, fire alarm systems, television systems, medical gas systems, and ceiling systems.
• Completes preventive maintenance inspections according to scheduled checkpoints and maintains documentation appropriately.
• Assists with maintenance on associated equipment within assigned area(s).
• Performs other related duties as required and assists other hospital and clinic departments with daily maintenance and support services.
• Assists with repairs and upkeep of facilities structures and building systems.
• In the event of severe weather emergencies or disasters, personnel will be assigned a work area and remain onsite throughout the duration.
• Remains knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, or regulatory agency requirements that apply to the assigned area of responsibility and ensures compliance.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent (required).
• 2 years of experience in Commercial, Industrial, or Hospital Maintenance or completion of the Ochsner Apprenticeship program (required).
• Trade school or company school (preferred).
• Healthcare experience (preferred).
• Valid driver’s license in the state of residence (required).

Skills

• Experience with all hand and power tools.
• Familiarity with a wide range of skilled crafts including plumbing, electrical, HVAC-R, and carpentry.
• Strong interpersonal skills with a can-do attitude.
• Mechanically inclined with the ability to multi-task and work with minimal supervision.
• Working knowledge of state, parish, and building codes, as well as JCAHO standards.
• Self-directed with the ability to handle mental and physical stress/pressure to complete all jobs, including emergencies.
• Ability to work indoors, outdoors, and in restricted spaces for extended periods.
• Basic knowledge of reading, writing, and understanding mechanical and electrical symbolism to interpret blueprints, schematics, specifications, and mechanical drawings.
• Ability to properly handle power and hand tools required to perform job duties effectively.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply effective judgment when performing job duties.
• Ability to work on-call for emergencies and extended hours.

Schedule

Tuesday–Saturday, 2:30 PM–11:00 PM.

Physical and Environmental Demands

• Heavy Work - Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid, or tissue, but exposure or potential for exposure may occur.
• Works with patients who have known or suspected communicable diseases and may enter isolation rooms.
• Occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases.
