About the role
This position’s hiring range is anticipated to be $18 per hour to $20 per hour, depending on experience, plus great benefits. The General Landscaper – Tier 1 assists in the maintenance of landscaped areas of the Sanctuary, maintains the natural beauty of undeveloped areas, and performs a variety of related tasks.
Responsibilities
- Remove weeds from lawns, gardens, flower beds, rock beds, walkways, parking lots, animal areas, high-traffic areas, and natural landscaped areas using manual and power tools.
- Perform daily mowing and edging of lawns with gas or battery-powered mowers and trimmers.
- Prune trees and various vegetation to industry standards using chainsaws, power tools, and hand tools.
- Water plants by hand using a hose and/or watering can as directed.
- Monitor plants while working and report any changes or concerns.
- Perform snow removal from walkways and public buildings.
- Maintain a safe workplace by modeling safe work practices, adhering to organizational safety rules, and communicating about unsafe conditions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Experience
- Must be personally committed to the Mission and Core Values of Best Friends Animal Society.
- Previous experience in landscaping or gardening is preferred.
- Interest in plants, especially native plants, is a plus.
- Must be able to work alone and as part of a team.
- Ability to follow written or oral directions effectively.
- Sensitivity to environmental issues.
- Positive approach to challenging situations.
- Ability to learn on the job and desire to learn new skills.
- Basic computer skills including email, calendar, and internet applications.
- Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends’ positions on issues.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
- Must be able to work outdoors for prolonged periods in all weather conditions with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees.
- Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity daily, including climbing, lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
- Exposure to dogs, cats, and other animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
- Must have a valid driver’s license for at least three years and qualify to be added to Best Friends’ insurance.
Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to department needs; the position could include weekends and holiday work. Travel up to 5%.
