About the role
The General Foreperson coordinates crew members, equipment, tools, and supplies in order to complete all jobs efficiently, correctly, and profitably.
Responsibilities
- Always follow and help enforce safe practices and rules
- Keep utility company representatives informed of crew members and equipment
- Establish and monitor systems to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness of all equipment and facilities
- Promptly dispatch crews to job sites
- Instruct employees how to operate all equipment and use materials safely
- Avoid waste, loss and hazards by using and transporting materials and chemicals appropriately
- Ensure first aid equipment is readily available to crews at all times
- Assist in filling out accident reports promptly and completely when needed and investigate cause(s) of accidents
- Hire, train, and discipline employees
- Determine workable hours and approve all time submitted by employees (chargeable and non-chargeable); Keeps non-chargeable hours and overtime to a minimum
- Maintain good morale and handle basic grievances
- Study and determine most efficient way to handle each job, considering such factors as location, season, crew availability, equipment, materials, etc.
- Ensure there are sufficient and appropriate materials and equipment to do each job
- Accountable for all tools, equipment, safety devices, materials, and supplies
- Store equipment and materials safely each night to avoid loss by theft, vandalism, etc.
- Know operating conditions of all equipment; recommend and schedule replacement of maintenance in time to avoid a breakdown
- Ensure that all drivers possess the proper driving card and are approved to drive for the vehicle they operate
- Ensure that all employees have the proper certifications and qualifications for their positions and the equipment they operate
- Perform duties for storm work as needed
Requirements
- At least 2-3 years’ previous experience in electric utility vegetation management, construction, logging, landscaping, mechanical, or military industries preferred; previous experience as a General Foreperson preferred
- Driver's License is required; CDL is preferred
Qualifications
- High School diploma or education equivalent preferred

- Able to supervise the performance of individual employees and various crews’ performance
- Able to delegate work and take accountability for the performance of a crew
- Maintain a professional and effective relationship with employees, customers, and the general public
- Able to meet and demonstrate qualifications of all positions on a crew
- Able to travel throughout the week to assigned crew locations
- Strong organizational skills
- Able to obtain and maintain first-aid certification and CPR
- Able to effectively communicate with others
- Able to travel out of town for storm restoration work when needed
