General Engineering Tech I

About the role

Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; assisting the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives.

Responsibilities

• Administers construction and/or bridge inspection record-keeping activities in a District Area Office.
• Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders, and revised estimates of quantities.
• Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
• Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
• Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals, and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, rules, regulations, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Maintains files of shop drawings and monitors progress of construction activities.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent in general high school studies.
• 4 years of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• Valid driver’s license (position requires driving a state vehicle).

Preferred Qualifications

• Commercial Driver’s License.

• Preparation, review, processing, and compliance of applicable plans, specifications, and estimates.
• Knowledge of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
• Performing calculations including material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data, and engineering calculations.
• Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports.
• Maintaining safe working relationships.
• Understanding of maintenance concepts, methods, policies, and requirements.
• Construction record auditing.
• Planning, coordinating, and handling multiple projects to meet short and long-term deadlines.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to extreme cold and heat (below 32°F and/or above 100°F for more than one hour).
• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
• Exposure to hazards such as moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals.
• Medium work: Lifting up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lifting or carrying objects up to 25 lbs.
• Balancing: Walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
• Walking: Moving on foot to accomplish tasks, including long distances or between work sites.
• Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
• Visual acuity: Required for operating motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment, determining work quality, and making general observations of facilities/structures.

Conditions of Employment

• Must pass a pre-employment physical due to the physically demanding nature of the job.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions (this is a Safety Impact position subject to random drug testing).
• Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
