Position Summary
The position performs manual labor in the maintenance and construction of city streets and city owned facilities. Operates various motorized vehicles and equipment, including front end loader, dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, street roller, industrial mower, tree chipper, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Clear brush, rake leaves and mow grass.
- Paint crosswalks and parking lines and curbs.
- Remove snow from streets by shoveling, plowing and salting; Drive snow plow equipment.
- Drive vehicles as required to perform work as directed.
- Install, maintain and repair traffic and other regulatory signs.
- Check, clean and maintain all equipment used.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the garage facility.
- Repair curbing and manholes.
- Install and remove snow fence.
- Cut and remove trees; operation of chainsaw and stump grinder.
- Maintain cemetery buildings, facilities, head stones, flowers, trees and bushes.
- Maintain parks and athletic field buildings, lawn, shelters, fences, trees, flowers and bushes.
- Digs holes/trenches and assist in planting, fertilizing and watering lawns, plants, shrubs, and trees.
- Clear and clean roadsides, gutters, culverts, catch basins, and other drainage facilities.
- Set-up and take down of equipment for city recreation facilities.
- Patch streets (hot mix), fill potholes, seals cracks, grades gravel streets and gravel shoulders, fill holes in street (cold patch).
- Clean catch basins, clean storm sewer lines and manholes, repair damaged catch basins and manholes.
- Grease and check equipment, have a working knowledge of equipment and maintenance needs.
- Repair City facilities and equipment.
- Control traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.
- Perform related work as assigned.
- Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of methods and materials used in general maintenance and repair work is required.
- General knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of equipment operation and limited knowledge of servicing assigned equipment and its adaptations and specialized uses is necessary.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.

- Completion of a high school diploma or GED equivalent. A combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Must possess a valid driver's license, issued by the State of Wisconsin and also possess a valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A for air brakes, issued by the State of Wisconsin, or be able to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
Health Insurance
- Full time employees are eligible for health insurance coverage. Information regarding specifications is available with Human Resources.
- Dental & Vision Insurance: The employee and employer both pay 50% of the premium.
- Life Insurance: The City has group life insurance with Securian Life Insurance. You are eligible the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment. Your insurance will equal earnings paid the previous year, rounded to the next high thousand. (Example - $20,600 = $21,000)
- Additional Group Life Insurance through Securian Life is available to employees. Employees can choose up to three (3) additional units of insurance. Employees pay all of this premium on a payroll deduction. Coverage is available at 100% of your previous year's earnings.
- Spouse and Dependent coverage is also available. Employee pays all of this premium on a payroll deduction. The spouse is insured for $10,000, dependents are insured for $5,000 each for one unit of coverage or the employee can select two units of coverage to increase coverage for his/her spouse to $20,000 and $10,000 for each dependent.
- Sick Leave: All full time employees earn one (1) day sick leave for each calendar month of service.
- Holiday Time: Employees are granted the following holidays: New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Good Friday, Day after Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Christmas Eve Day, 4th of July, Christmas Day, Labor Day, New Year's Eve Day, and two (2) floating holidays if hired before July 1. The employee must work the day before and the day after the holiday to be eligible for holiday pay.
- Vacation: All regular full-time employees will qualify for, and receive, vacation pay as provided under the following schedule: Upon hire will pro-rate 104 hours of vacation. January 1 following start date thru year 3 eligible for 104 hours of vacation. Years 4 - 6 eligible for 128 hours of vacation. Years 7 - 11 eligible for 144 hours of vacation. Years 12 - 19 eligible for 192 hours of vacation. Years 20+ eligible for 224 hours of vacation.
- Deferred Compensation: A tax deferred compensation plan is available to City employees through Wisconsin Deferred Compensation Program.
- Wisconsin Retirement System: Full time employees are eligible immediately for coverage. Mandatory employee-employer contributions are credited to your WRS account for retirement purposes.
- Flexible Benefits Plan: Employees have an opportunity to increase their take-home pay by reducing taxes through the Flexible Benefits Plan. Flexible benefits include out-of-pocket health, dental or vision expenses and dependent care.
