General Building Maintenance Worker II

About the Role

Performs general repair and maintenance of architectural and structural systems in county buildings, including doors, windows, floors, walls, ceilings, stairs, office furniture, shelving, and roof repairs. Safely operates, cleans, maintains, and stores a variety of hand tools; inspects facilities to identify architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing deficiencies; conducts building safety inspections; performs complex skilled trade work independently; prepares work requests for all necessary repairs and maintenance; and coordinates with facility users to correct deficiencies in building systems.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain architectural and structural systems in county buildings.
  • Handle items such as doors, windows, floors, walls, ceilings, stairs, office furniture, shelving, and roof repairs.
  • Safely operate, clean, maintain, and store a variety of hand tools.
  • Inspect facilities to identify architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing deficiencies.
  • Conduct building safety inspections.
  • Perform complex skilled trade work independently.
  • Prepare work requests for all necessary repairs and maintenance.
  • Coordinate with facility users to correct deficiencies in building systems.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.
  • Completion of an acceptable apprentice‑level training program in a specific trade with two years of full performance‑level experience in building maintenance, repair, or construction trades work; or three years of full performance level experience in two or more skilled trades related to building maintenance and repair work.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be issued a procurement card and adhere to all associated policies and procedures governing its use.
  • Must complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre‑employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to climb extension ladders and scaffolds up to 50 ft.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs. with assistance of a dolly, lift, or staff.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, and work in tiring/uncomfortable conditions for extended periods.
  • All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in building maintenance and construction trades.
  • Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials pertinent to the trades.
  • Ability to lead a crew of skilled trades personnel.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, manufacturer’s manuals, and shop drawings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to estimate time and material needs, and determine when repair is not economically practical.
  • Ability to perform routine clerical tasks and basic mathematical computations.
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on a motor vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience in the commercial carpentry trade and general knowledge of interior finishes.
  • Knowledge in other trades such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and/or architectural and structural systems.
  • Basic computer skills such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Schedule and Location

  • Flexible working schedule required, including call‑back and on‑call participation.
  • Position located at the Judicial Complex; work may be assigned at the County Courthouse, Adult Detention Center, or other surrounding buildings of the campus.
  • Can be assigned anywhere in the county daily.
  • Position location and work schedule can be altered or changed at any time due to business necessity and operational needs.

Selection Procedure

Panel interview and may include exercise.
