Responsibilities
- Operate CNC Gleason gear generating equipment to manufacture precision gears in accordance with engineering drawings, gear specifications, work instructions, and shop floor documentation while maintaining quality and production standards.
- Follow setup sheets, work instructions, and programming documentation to set up and operate CNC Gleason gear generating machines.
- Install and true cutting tools, workholding fixtures, arbors, and machine tooling for each production run.
- Verify machine offsets, tooling dimensions, and program parameters prior to production.
- Produce quality parts efficiently while meeting production schedules.
- Verify shop floor documentation and engineering drawings are at the current revision level before beginning production.
- Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using micrometers, calipers, gear measurement equipment, dial indicators, and other precision measuring instruments.
- Monitor tool wear and machine performance; replace or adjust tooling as necessary to maintain product quality and maximize tool life.
- Complete work orders in the order specified by the supervisor or shop scheduling system.
- Record labor, production quantities, scrap, downtime, and inspection results in the shop floor scheduling system.
- Identify and report machine malfunctions, tooling issues, and quality concerns to the Area Lead or Maintenance personnel.
- Maintain required coolant levels, lubrication systems, and perform routine operator preventive maintenance.
- Follow all safety requirements, including job-specific JSA, and work in a safe manner.
- Sustain the 5S ratings of the work area.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities to enhance safety, quality, productivity, and equipment performance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED with a machining certificate from a reputable trade school preferred.
- Demonstrated experience operating CNC gear generating equipment in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience with Gleason gear generators and gear manufacturing processes preferred.
Skills
- Thorough knowledge of blueprint and gear drawing interpretation, gear terminology, and use of precision measuring equipment.
- General understanding of CNC machine programming and operation.
- Familiarity with gear cutting principles, tooling, machine setup, and inspection methods.
- Knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and gear inspection equipment is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Stand for up to 12 hours per day.
- Lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and twisting.
- Frequent use of hands for handling tooling, fixtures, measuring instruments, and machine controls.
- Ability to distinguish fine visual details for inspecting gear tooth profiles, surface finish, and dimensional characteristics.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to machine noise, metal chips, cutting fluids, and varying temperatures while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
