Gatewood Elementary - Special Education Assistant 1-1 (Extended Resource) - 1.0 FTE

This 1-on-1 Special Education Instructional Assistant position supports a 1st Grade student in the Extended Resource service pathway at Gatewood Elementary. The role focuses on helping the student build relationships, communicate with peers and adults, navigate the school safely, and access instruction across all content areas. The ideal candidate is compassionate, collaborative, and committed to creating inclusive learning environments.

About the Role

This position assists in the supervision, care, and instruction of a special needs student in both regular and self-contained classroom settings. Duties include implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, providing information to school personnel, and attending IEP meetings. Responsibilities vary based on program needs, such as supporting students with autism, behavior disorders, or other conditions.

Responsibilities

• Adapt classroom activities and materials under teacher direction to ensure participation for all special education students.
• Administer tests, grade assignments, and organize materials to assist in evaluating student progress.
• Provide first aid and medical assistance as required for injured or medically fragile students.
• Support students with personal care needs, including toileting, changing diapers, tube feeding, and assisting menstruating students.
• Attend meetings and in-service training (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures).
• Confer regularly with special education and general education teachers to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives.
• Communicate with parents via phone, email, or meetings regarding student progress.
• Implement behavioral plans to meet students' needs, ensure safety, and maintain consistency.
• Instruct students individually or in groups, reinforcing academic, social, and daily living skills per IEP goals.
• Maintain instructional materials and student records, including attendance and adapted projects.
• Monitor students in various school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, cafeteria) to ensure safety.
• Perform other related duties to support the efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, plus one of the following:
  • Qualifying score on the Education Testing Service (ETS) paraeducator assessment;
  • Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university;
  • 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher;
  • Completion of a paraeducator apprenticeship program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
• Valid Washington State Driver’s License or equivalent mobility.
• Ability to pass a criminal justice fingerprint background check.
• Willingness to complete training in CPR, First Aid, and secure training.

Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge: Instructional procedures, age-appropriate activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, and child development/behavior stages.
• Skills:
  • Adhere to safety practices and operate standard office equipment.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Basic signing may be required.
• Abilities:
  • Perform basic math, read manuals, follow multi-step instructions, and communicate effectively.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and work with constant interruptions.
  • Collaborate with diverse groups and maintain confidentiality.
  • Work as part of a team and use personal computers.
• Physical Demands:
  • Seldom lift up to 50 pounds (with or without assistance).
  • Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity.
  • Support structured learning and behavior shaping activities.
  • Approximately 45% sitting, 25% walking, and 30% standing.

Benefits

Eligibility for benefits is determined by working 630 hours or more during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Benefits are administered through the Washington State Healthcare Authority (HCA) under the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB).
