About the role

The Gateway Electrical Engineer provides full life-cycle support to gateway locations from design inception through site improvement and maintenance. They serve as the primary technical authority for electrical power systems, standby generation, UPS infrastructure, grounding and bonding, HVAC, building automation, and related monitoring systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own the conceptual design for existing gateway data center upgrades and design-solutions, which add capacity, improve availability, increase efficiency and sustainability.
  • Create, review, and edit facilities designs or design revisions to existing infrastructure.
  • Cook up plans, blueprints, and specifications for facility improvements and modifications.
  • Coordinate creating plans, blueprints, and specifications for facility improvements and modifications.
  • Develop innovative solutions for gateway locations.
  • Lead and manage facility-related technical projects, including renovations, expansions, and equipment installations.
  • Oversee small-scale projects, renovations, and improvements within the facility.
  • Collaborate with the project management team for larger projects.
  • Oversee construction, maintenance and enhancement of electrical infrastructure for global locations.
  • Work directly with consulting engineering, construction and third-party vendors for various capital projects and maintenance projects.
  • Act as resident engineer during new construction projects.
  • Support construction, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Work on concurrent projects, sometimes in multiple geographical regions.
  • Initiate and lead engineering audits including on-site visits.
  • Produce reports outlining risks with recommended mitigations and remediations.
  • Assess company's facilities capacity and planning for future expansion or downsizing as needed.
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise on engineering aspects related to building systems, utilities, monitoring systems, and infrastructure.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to other team members with technical tasks.
  • Support sites in diagnosing and resolving technical issues related to building systems and equipment.
  • Aid in setting up, and configuring of technical equipment, systems, and devices.
  • Respond to technical emergencies promptly, such as system failures or technical incidents that impact facility operations. Including after-ours and on-call response.
  • Provide documented incident timelines and corrective action plans.
  • Directly support operational issues with ad-hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews, including critical equipment, and event support.
  • Interface with internal and external customers to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in services delivered.
  • Participate in designing the infrastructure (hardware and software) necessary for the monitoring implementation from equipment monitoring to user interfaces.
  • Provide procedures and instructions for PSM and for gateway personnel on alarm response.
  • Ensure the necessary redundancy in the monitoring system required by the SLA.
  • Integrate and maintain technology solutions, such as building automation systems, monitoring systems, and other technologies.
  • Continuously improve the accuracy and relevance of thresholds and alarms.
  • Conduct tests and assessments on technical equipment to identify malfunctions, errors, or inefficiencies.
  • Design and execute test plans and cases to validate gateway infrastructure functionality.
  • Identify and report issues found during testing.
  • Implement quality control measures.
  • Coordinate inspections and testing as needed.
  • Identify potential risks to facility operations and implement measures to mitigate them.
  • Audit site infrastructure to identify potential issues or potential improvements.
  • Prepare and submit reports on facility-related compliance matters.
  • Analyze incidents, and investigate equipment failures and identify root causes to prevent recurrence.
  • Troubleshoot, conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and create Corrective Action (CA) documentation for site/equipment failures.
  • Recommend preventive and predictive maintenance tasks to ensure equipment availability.
  • Provide training to staff on technical aspects of facility operations and equipment.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and improvement within the facilities department.
  • Create written processes where consistency is needed across ground facilities.
  • Develop and implement site metrics necessary for both SLA tracking and as input for efficiency planning.
  • Manage, analyze, and report on performance metrics and use patterns.
  • Aid in integrating and maintaining technology solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years related experience.
  • Prior data center or telecom engineering experience preferred.
  • Proven project management responsibilities.
  • Experience solving problems with engineered solutions.
  • Experience managing engineering contractors and consultants.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong engineering judgment and can provide recommendations despite uncertainty/ambiguity.
  • Knowledge and experience in facility engineering including electrical power, standby generators, UPSs, HVAC, grounding and bonding, data acquisition, security, and fire systems.
  • Data-oriented.
  • Ability to build trust and relationships with different stakeholders.
  • Adaptable and inclined to get into the field to see things up close in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven experience with various industry standards and best practices (NEC, NFPA 70/70E/110, TIA-607-D, TIA-942, IEC 60364, and the IEEE C-series).
  • Ability to work with and apply standards.
  • Cross-cultural communication.
