Gas Free Technician (All Levels) 1

About the Role

The Gas Free Technician ensures all work functions in confined and enclosed spaces are safe by performing atmospheric testing to ensure the area(s) complies with National Fire Protection Association, NAVSEA, and 29 CFR 1915 requirements. Provides health and safety guidance and support to the workforce. Promotes Total Safety Culture. Ensures that General Dynamics NASSCO maintains compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations. Reports to the supervisor of Safety.

Responsibilities

• Interact professionally with all levels of management and employees on site
• Posting and follow-up inspections of initial Marine Chemist certifications
• Perform daily bump and periodic calibration on gas free testing equipment
• Perform space inspections and conduct atmospheric tests with supplied testing equipment
• Take corrective action in the event of adverse inspection results and/or test results
• Demonstrate ability to work and problem solve effectively in a demanding environment
• Review current literature and trade publications to remain current regarding all OSHA and other applicable health and safety standards and regulations
• Establish a close working relationship and communicate with department, area, and ship managers on a regular basis by attending meetings and being available for phone calls, email, or texts
• Other responsibilities and duties as assigned

Requirements

• Current Shipyard Competent Person Certificate
• OSHA 10 Hour 1915 Maritime Safety Certificate
• Permit Authorizing Individual (PAI)
• Basic knowledge of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered, including:
  • Applicable Federal and State OSHA regulations
  • NAVSEA Standard Items
  • Techniques used to recognize health and safety hazards
  • Working with hazardous materials
  • Shipyard operations
  • Safe operation of tools and machinery
  • Use of computer software programs (MS Office, iOS applications)
• Ability to provide solutions to routine technical problems
• Pass pre-employment drug screening and background check
• Safety-sensitive position will require random drug and alcohol testing
• Ability to obtain access to Department of Defense sites (DBIDS)
• Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills

Physical Demands

The essential functions of this role require work in both an office and industrial setting. The role requires:

• Prolonged periods of working in a stationary position, operating a computer, computer programs, and standard office equipment
• Perceiving information and communicating effectively with others in person, online, and on the phone
• Prolonged periods of working in indoor and outdoor industrial settings
• Ability to safely access, navigate, and traverse the shipyard, construction areas, production areas, ships, and warehouses
• Ability to transit uneven surfaces and move quickly to avoid hazards and respond to unexpected obstacles
• Observing, detecting, identifying, perceiving, recognizing, and processing information to remain alert and comply with all safety requirements
• Moving, transporting, and using equipment necessary to perform essential duties
• Ascending and descending stairs and ladders, transiting on scaffolding and at heights, and transiting through manholes and other narrow, confined, or congested spaces
• Exposure to industrial areas containing hazardous materials, loud noise (including sirens, horns, chipping, slamming, and hammering), dust, fumes, and weather conditions

Pay

• Associate Gas Free Technician: $46,000 - $59,500
• Gas Free Technician I: $56,300 - $77,000
• Gas Free Technician II: $66,500 - $86,000

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
