Gameplay Programmer (Contract)

Firefly Studios · Indiana, United States · 3 wk ago
EngineeringContract

Duration: 17 August 2026 – 28 July 2028. Must be UK based. Remote role.

About the role

We are looking for a dedicated and passionate Intermediate level Generalist Gameplay Programmer to join a team of 10+ developers, working on an ambitious new RTS in Unity, alongside 3 other Programmers. This is a fantastic opportunity for any generalist programmer who likes to get their hands stuck into lots of different areas of gameplay programming.

You will work closely with the other programmers, brainstorming different approaches to problems together, and splitting up the work amongst yourselves. It is essential that you have a strong voice and are able to look at a problem and propose your own solutions, rather than waiting to be told how to do it. While the environment is collaborative, you must be confident in your ability to self direct and produce results without close oversight.

Some areas this role will involve include AI Behaviours, Building Behaviour, Game Systems Programming – and more! We are looking for a generalist gameplay programmer who can take a chunk out of each part of making the game.

Firefly Studios explicitly does not allow any form of Generative AI, including AI Generated Code. This is not up to personal discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Adapt to new systems or techniques and approach problems creatively
  • Work outside of Unity’s editor and object workflow, as most of the engine is custom
  • Write code in C#; familiarity with lower-level programming (e.g. C++ and C) is desired
  • Hit the ground running alongside experienced developers and take on a sizeable workload early
  • Demonstrate skills via a portfolio of finished projects (demos or shipped)

Requirements

  • Experience working on a video game project in a mixed-discipline team
  • Skilled at debugging
  • Knows how to write runtime allocation-free code
  • Produces reasonably optimized code and enjoys further optimization when necessary
  • Understands data-oriented programming
  • Familiarity with lower-level techniques used for “from-scratch” games (e.g. intrusive linked lists)
  • Open to working with a Producer following Agile methodologies (daily standups, sprints, etc.)
  • Knowledge about and a passion for strategy games
