About the Role
Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with the general education teacher. This position is shared between two Silver Spring elementary schools: Montgomery Knolls (0.5 FTE every morning) and Glenallan (0.5 FTE every afternoon), where the teacher will work with primary grade students with special education services within the general education environment.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
- Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
- Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
- Successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, to support students with disabilities.
- Support behavioral interventions as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
- Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
- Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
- Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education programs, IEP processes, and state/federal policies (ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004).
- Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials for students with disabilities.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
- Knowledge of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS) performance standards.
Pay
The wage range for this position is a salary between $66,690 and $135,745 based on education and experience.
