FY27: Teacher, Special Education, Classic Autism, Sherwood ES, 1.0 FTE

Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

About the role

• Full-time teaching position in a classic autism program
• Support a small class of 5-8 students
• Staffed with one teacher and two paraeducators

Responsibilities

• Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities
• Collaborate with general education teachers
• Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities
• Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP)
• Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement
• Successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions
• Support behavioral interventions
• Adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in special education
• Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment
• Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary)
• Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education
• Certification in a content area is desirable
• Knowledge of MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range, MCPS special education program, IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments
• Knowledge of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education
• Ability to provide instructional support and adapt instructional programs and materials
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS)

Skills

• Works well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians
• Strong knowledge of elementary math methods if seeking an elementary position

Pay

Salary range between $66,690 and $135,745 based on education and experience.
