Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
Responsibilities
- Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities
- Collaborate with general education teachers
- Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities
- Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP)
- Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement
- Successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions
- Support behavioral interventions in identified schools and programs
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education
- Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment
- Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary)
- Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education
- Certification in a content area is desirable
- Knowledge of MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and MCPS special education program
- Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments
- Knowledge of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies related to special education
- Ability to provide instructional support and adapt instructional programs and materials
- Excellent communication skills
- Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS)

Pay
The wage range for this position is a salary between $62,558 and $127,334 based on education and experience.
