Summary Description

Under direction of the school principal, provides a developmentally appropriate balanced literacy program for primary grade students. Provides explicit reading instruction and support to small groups of students (15 or less) to ensure Success for every Student.

Responsibilities

• Knowledgeable about all components of a primary reading program including guided reading, independent literacy centers, word work, shared reading, read aloud, independent reading, and modeled/shared/guided writing.
• Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth of each student.
• Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings.
• Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.
• Maintains an appropriate level of cleanliness and orderliness in the classroom and school.
• Maintains appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

Requirements

• Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

Qualifications

• Required: Bachelor's degree in early childhood education, elementary education or reading from an accredited college or university.
• Preferred: Master's degree in education.
• Certification & Flexibility: Meets Maryland state certification requirements in early childhood or elementary education.

Skills

• Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, MCPS policies, and effective instructional practices.
• Understanding of the teaching/learning process.
• Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
• Ability to infuse technology into curriculum.
• Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school-based staff, students, parents and community.
• Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
