About the Role

At the direction of the principal, assists teachers by performing a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well-being. Works individually and in small groups to reinforce instruction, monitor performance, and support learning. This position also performs instructional and classroom management supports, as well as related clerical tasks to support teachers and other professional staff in all classrooms or learning environments.

Responsibilities

• Continues planned instructional activities during teacher's temporary absence from the classroom.
• Assists with self-care plans such as toileting, feeding, personal hygiene, dressing, and other daily living activities.
• Physically assists students to engage in activities such as walking or eating; able to kneel and work on the floor with students.
• Performs medical tasks as authorized by the Maryland Nurse Practice Act, which may include administration of medications, treatments, G-tube feedings, or clean, intermittent/non-complex bladder catheterization after training (COMAR 13A.05.05.08 (D)).
• Assists with physically aggressive behaviors.
• Supports implementation of the instructional program and participates in monitoring and ensuring appropriate student behavior.
• Performs related clerical tasks to support teachers and professional staff.

Physical Demands

• Frequent bending, walking, running, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 50 pounds.
• Able to walk for long periods and assist with daily living activities such as toileting and feeding.
• Outside duty may be required.
• Must accommodate flexible scheduling, change of location, and/or program as needed.

Requirements

• Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and practices applicable to the assignment.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and perform all required tasks.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to read/write/speak English.
• Ability to interact with and support students with special needs.
• Knowledge of standard desktop computer hardware and software such as MS Office products and database software.
• Knowledge of and ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Qualifications

These requirements are listed in order of preference:

• AA degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. College coursework should include a minimum of nine credit-hours related to the education field, such as behavior management or instructional strategies, and one year of experience working with students in structured educational settings.
• If no related education coursework, two to four years of experience working with children and adolescents in a structured setting (e.g., daycare, preschool) is required.
• At least 48 college credits and two years of experience in an education-related field (e.g., preschool, after-school programs, extended day, or school/non-school-based departments).
• Two years of experience in an education-related field and successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment with a qualifying score of 455 or higher.
• Any combination of applicable education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.

Pay

The wage range for this position is between $26.23 and $40.17 per hour, based on years of service.
