About the Role

At the direction of the principal, this paraeducator performs a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well-being to support students who are diploma bound. The work focuses on facilitating student mastery of grade-level or above curriculum. Students supported at this level are typically in general education classes throughout the school day and may be pulled out for individualized or small group reinforcement of instruction. This position also performs instructional and classroom management supports, as well as related clerical tasks to support teachers and other professional staff in all types of classrooms or learning environments.

The ELA Paraeducator (6 hours of 6701 and 1 hour of 6491) supports students in developing foundational literacy and English Language Arts skills under the direction of the classroom teacher.

All new paraeducators are hired at a grade 13 and have the opportunity to promote to a grade 14 after successfully completing the six-month probationary period and the required number of training hours.

Responsibilities

  • Provide small-group and individualized academic support
  • Reinforce reading and writing instruction
  • Assist with classroom activities
  • Monitor student progress
  • Support students who need additional intervention
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to promote student engagement, achievement, and a positive learning environment
  • Continue planned instructional activities during teacher's temporary absence from the classroom

Requirements

Physical Demands

  • Frequent bending, walking, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 50 pounds may be required

Special Requirements

  • Outside duty may be required
  • Must accommodate flexible scheduling and change of location and/or program, as needed

Education and Experience

Paraeducators hired into a Title I position must meet the qualifications established by the Every Child Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA). High school diploma required and one of the following:

  • Associate’s or higher college degree
  • At least 48 credits of study at an accredited institution of higher education
  • A passing grade on the ParaPro examination

Certificate and license requirements: None.

Skills

  • Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and practices applicable to assignment
  • Knowledge of instructional goals and policies of Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Ability to assist with implementation of the instructional program and to participate in monitoring and ensuring appropriate student behavior
  • Ability to exhibit patient behavior and to work effectively with children, young adults, and staff members
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and to perform all required tasks
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Ability to interact with and support students with special needs
  • Knowledge of standard computer hardware and software such as Google Workspace, MS Office, and web-based instructional tools
  • Knowledge of and the ability to quickly learn and meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS)

Pay

The wage range for this position is between $24.38 and $36.67 per hour, based on years of service.
