About the Role

This paraeducator position supports the prekindergarten program, which provides comprehensive services focused on early learning, health, and family well-being through individualized learning experiences, play, and planned instruction. Areas of focus include social skills, emotional well-being, language, literacy, math, and science. Under the direction of the principal, the paraeducator performs tasks that promote school readiness and well-being for students ages three to five, including instructional and classroom management support, as well as clerical tasks to assist teachers and professional staff.

All new paraeducators are hired at a grade 15 and may promote to a grade 16 after successfully completing a six-month probationary period and required training hours.

Responsibilities

• Support planned instructional activities during the teacher’s temporary absence from the classroom.
• Assist with the implementation of instructional programs and monitor student behavior.
• Perform clerical tasks to support teachers and professional staff in classroom or learning environments.
• Accommodate flexible scheduling, change of location, and/or program as needed.
• Engage in outside duty as required.

Requirements

To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet one of the following criteria and upload the corresponding documentation to their profile:

• Unofficial university transcript showing 48+ credits, or
• Official transcript (evaluated by an agency approved by the Maryland State Department of Education) if credits/degree were attained outside the United States, or
• Unofficial ParaPro Assessment result with a passing score.

Qualifications

The following requirements are listed in order of preference:

• Associate’s degree (required); Bachelor’s degree (preferred). College coursework should include a minimum of nine credit-hours in education-related fields such as behavior management or instructional strategies. One year of experience working with students in structured educational settings is preferred. OR
• At least 48 college credits and two years of experience in a structured setting (e.g., daycare, preschool, after-school program, extended day, or school/non-school-based departments). OR
• Two years of experience in a structured setting (e.g., daycare, preschool, adult day program, after-school program, extended day, or school/non-school-based departments) and successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment with a qualifying score of 455 or higher. OR
• Any combination of applicable education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills for the role.

Skills

• Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and Montgomery County Public Schools’ instructional goals and policies.
• Ability to assist with instructional programs and monitor student behavior.
• Patience and effectiveness in working with children, young adults, and staff.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and perform required tasks.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Ability to interact with and support students with special needs.
• Proficiency in standard computer hardware/software (e.g., Google Workspace, MS Office, web-based instructional tools).
• Ability to quickly learn and meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Physical Demands

• Frequent bending, walking, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 50 pounds.

Pay

The wage range for this position is $24.38 to $36.67 per hour, based on years of service.

Schedule

• Part-time, 10-month position.
• Day shift.
