About the Role
Under supervision of a manager, supervisor, or field manager, performs routine duties involved in the production and serving of food and in cleaning kitchen facilities and equipment. This is the entry and general helper level in the school meals program. Employees receive on-the-job training in basic food production and cafeteria operations from managers and other Division of Food and Nutrition Services staff.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine food production and serving tasks.
- Clean kitchen facilities and equipment.
- Follow HACCP guidelines for safe food handling from receiving to service.
- Practice standard sanitation procedures for care and cleaning of kitchen equipment.
- Learn standard school cafeteria operations.
- Gather necessary menu items, recipe ingredients, and supplies.
- Comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Communicate effectively to meet the needs of students, school staff, and the community.
- Work cooperatively with others under constant deadlines.
Physical Demands
- Sustained moderate physical effort.
- Movement of objects weighing 40-60 pounds.
- Operation of commercial food service equipment.
- Continuous standing.
- Exposure to extreme variations in temperature.
Requirements
- Completion of the ninth grade required; high school or GED diploma preferred.
- Experience with food preparation techniques and safety procedures.
- Valid Class C noncommercial driver’s license.
- Sanitation certification required or must be obtained within the first six months of employment.
- Ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
- Basic human relations skills to work cooperatively in close proximity with others.
Skills
- Knowledge of basic food production.
- Ability to work with students, teachers, and school leadership staff.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Effective communication skills.
Pay
The wage range for this position is between $20.65 and $24.24 per hour, based on years of service.
Schedule
- Part-time.
- 10 working months.
- Day shift.
