About the role

This position is fully residential and fundamental to the success of the Summer School. The Head of Residential & Welfare (HoRW) works closely with the Camp Manager on all aspects of the residential program, serving as the team lead for all residential staff. The role ensures the smooth operation of every residential element, including laundry, overnight duties, and emergency calls. The post-holder is responsible for daily briefings of Residential Assistants, ensuring they have the information and resources needed for successful evening activities.

Students will engage directly with the post-holder, so comfort and confidence working with participants aged 8–18 years is essential. The role requires a strong understanding of Child Protection and Safeguarding policies, including maintaining appropriate boundaries between staff and students. Social media contact or any behavior contravening these policies is strictly prohibited. The ideal candidate will be a confident leader with empathy for learners and a willingness to return for future Summer Schools.

This role includes direct reports from the residential department and involves managing the residential team, greeting students, and ensuring smooth departures.

Responsibilities

• Lead the residential team, ensuring all aspects of the residential program run smoothly, including laundry, overnights, and emergency response.
• Provide daily direction and resources to Residential Assistants to ensure successful evening activities.
• Engage directly with students aged 8–18, maintaining high standards of behavior in residential areas.
• Organize and lead group activities for students.
• Ensure compliance with Child Protection and Safeguarding policies, including maintaining appropriate boundaries.
• Manage student arrivals and departures, including meeting, greeting, and ensuring readiness for departure.
• Adapt quickly to changes and remain flexible in a dynamic environment.
• Address large groups of young people with confidence and clarity.
• Remain calm and effective in emergency situations.
• Maintain a smart personal appearance and adhere to health and safety policies.

Requirements

• High standard of written and spoken English.
• First Aid Qualification.
• A responsible and safe attitude toward running a residential camp, including excursions and offsite activities.
• Willingness to complete induction and all mandatory training.
• Ability to engage and communicate effectively with staff and students.
• Strong leadership skills, including the ability to organize group activities and mentor team members.
• Flexibility, adaptability, and a positive attitude in a fast-paced environment.
• Enjoyment of working with children and teenagers from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Good problem-solving skills and the ability to work as both a team player and a team leader.
• Eligibility to work in the UK.
• Pass Disclosure Scotland/DBS or equivalent background checks.
• Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Approachability, patience, and excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain calm in emergencies and maintain a professional demeanor.

Desirable Qualifications

• Child Welfare Qualification.
• Previous Child Protection Training (training will be provided if needed).
• Lifeguarding Qualification.
• Good knowledge of Scottish culture and history.
• Fire Safety/Fire Marshall Training.
• Full UK Driving Licence and access to transport.
• Previous Summer School or residential camp experience.
• Ability to maintain long periods of physical activity.
• Positive attitude and a good sense of humor.
