Furniture Technical Designer
Overview of the Role
A creative staffing agency is seeking a Furniture Technical Designer to serve as a subject matter expert across indoor furniture categories, with a primary focus on case goods and upholstered furniture. This role will help establish product standards, technical specifications, and best practices that support the design, sourcing, and production of high-quality furniture.
Basics
Duration: Ongoing contract
Hours: Approximately 20-30 hours per week, with workload-based flexibility
Location: Remote, with preference for candidates in the Boston metro area
Travel: Monthly onsite meetings may be required
Top 3 Required Qualifications
Significant experience in furniture engineering, technical design, or product development
Deep expertise in indoor furniture, particularly case goods and upholstered furniture
Strong understanding of materials, construction methods, manufacturing processes, and quality standards
Other Qualifications
Experience working with furniture manufacturers, suppliers, and production partners
Strong understanding of wood species, finishes, hardware systems, upholstery construction, and furniture specifications
Experience establishing product standards, design guidelines, and quality requirements
Ability to evaluate product samples and troubleshoot technical or manufacturing challenges
Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Familiarity with furniture testing, compliance requirements, and industry standards
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Experience in lighting engineering or technical product design is a plus
Key Responsibilities
Product Standards & Technical Guidance
Develop and maintain technical standards across indoor furniture categories
Define requirements for materials, construction methods, measurements, and quality expectations
Establish best practices that support consistency across products and suppliers
Furniture Engineering & Product Development
Provide technical expertise on wood species, finishes, hardware, upholstery construction, cushioning systems, and structural requirements
Create guidelines for key product specifications, measurements, and ergonomic considerations
Advises teams on manufacturing processes, materials selection, and production feasibility
Supplier & Manufacturing Partnership
Partner with vendors and manufacturing partners to evaluate product quality and production methods
Support sourcing decisions by providing technical recommendations and cost considerations
Facilitate alignment on quality standards and construction requirements
Product Evaluation & Quality Support
Review samples and prototypes to ensure products meet established standards
Identify and troubleshoot technical issues related to materials, construction, quality, or manufacturing
Recommend improvements that enhance durability, functionality, and customer experience
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Support design, merchandising, sourcing, and product development teams with technical expertise
Translate complex engineering and construction concepts into practical guidance for broader teams
Contribute to continuous improvement of furniture standards and product development processes
