About the Role
The part-time Funeral Assistant / Attendant supports funeral directors by assisting with funeral, memorial, and other services, providing administrative support, and interacting with the public to ensure families receive compassionate care and support.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the dignified transport and care of the deceased, including removals, lifting, carrying, transporting, and preparation activities.
- Prepare, dress, and place decedents into caskets.
- Set up for services by delivering and arranging floral arrangements, chairs, caskets, urns, photos, and other personal keepsakes; ensure proper care and storage of all items.
- Prepare documents related to services, cremations, and maintenance as directed.
- Perform office duties such as answering phones, operating fax machines, computers, multiline phone systems, debit card machines, typewriters, postage meters, and stereo/video systems.
- Run errands including floral deliveries, supply pick-ups, and document drop-offs.
- Serve as an usher, assist with parking, and fulfill transportation requirements.
- Drive funeral home vehicles for services and family transportation.
- Assist with visitations, memorials, and funeral services, including chapel setup, dressing and casketing remains, and delivering family items and flowers.
- Greet and assist client families and visitors, providing information and support as needed.
- Accommodate family needs during services and visitations.
- Wash and clean funeral home vehicles and family vehicles when required.
- Work beyond standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Able to use a computer and type proficiently.
- Proficient in MS Office suite; willingness to learn other software.
- Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Able to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Able to work and communicate effectively with others.
- Able to maintain composure in challenging situations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and push/pull 200 lbs. or more for removals if required.
- Able to pass a background check.
Work Environment
- Work indoors and outdoors during all seasons and weather conditions.
- Professional dress required when in contact with families.
- Drive company-owned vehicles, with and without passengers, in varying traffic conditions.
- Frequent, continuous periods of standing (up to 6 hours per day).
- Climb stairs frequently to access buildings.
- Physical effort requiring manual dexterity, including paperwork, calculators, computers, and phone usage.
