About the Role
The Cook plays an integral role in the success of our team, our community, and creating a place our residents are proud to call home. The primary purpose of this position is to prepare cold food, bakery, and salad items.
Responsibilities
- Prepare meals that follow the menus and recipes, ensuring food is tasteful, temperature-appropriate, and appetizing in appearance.
- Inspect special diet trays to ensure the correct diet is served to residents.
- Serve food in accordance with established portion control procedures.
- Prepare food for therapeutic diets in accordance with planned menus and standardized recipes.
- Prepare cold items, bakery, and salad items, and cook hot foods as directed by supervisors.
- Ensure culinary practices, procedures, and food safety are followed, adhering to Food ServSafe regulations.
- Adhere to food service timelines and prepare authorized food substitutions for residents who refuse daily menu options.
- Serve meals to residents and guests as needed.
- Assist in food preparation for special meals, parties, and events.
- Ensure work areas are maintained in a clean and safe manner.
- Assist with food prep for upcoming meals and inventory/replenishment of food and supplies.
- Ensure food and supplies for the next meal are readily available and store incoming items as needed.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must meet all applicable state and federal requirements for this position.
- Six months of experience in a commercial kitchen preferred.
- Knowledgeable in cooking large quantities of food with minimal direction.
- Familiarity with culinary practices, procedures, and food safety.
Skills
- Ability to make independent decisions and follow instructions.
- Tactful communication with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and government agencies.
- Capable of working with ill, disabled, elderly, and emotionally upset individuals.
- Effective communication with supervisors, team members, residents, and families.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Tasks may involve potential and/or direct exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, air contaminants, and hazardous chemicals.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift/carry up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
- Frequently push/pull up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
- Bending, twisting, stooping, and reaching at or below shoulder level.
- Frequent standing or walking.
Cognitive Requirements
- Executes tasks independently.
- Ability to express yourself clearly and effectively.
Environmental Requirements
- Exposure to heat from kitchen equipment and cold from kitchen freezers.
- May work in outdoor weather conditions (e.g., BBQ).
- Moderate noise level.
