About the Role

At Atlantis Charter School, our goal is to support both the academic and social-emotional needs of our students. Our behavior management policies reflect our commitment to providing a positive learning environment. The paraprofessional performs duties both individually with students and organizationally in the classroom, supporting the teacher and assisting in implementing teacher-developed instruction. The role may include working one-on-one with a child or interacting with a group of students. Part of the paraprofessional's duties will include substituting for daily teacher absences on an as-needed basis.

Responsibilities

  • Works with individual or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Offers ideas and suggestions to improve the classroom environment where appropriate.
  • Assists the teacher in encouraging interest, enjoyment, appreciation, and curiosity in children.
  • Supports and maintains the discipline established by the teacher.
  • Assists children in developing responsibility for their own behavior.
  • Helps children develop confidence and competence in all areas of the curriculum.
  • Discusses children’s needs and reactions with the teacher and alerts the teacher to any specific issues related to an individual student.
  • Assists children in the development of speaking, writing, and listening skills.
  • Assists as directed by the teacher in maintaining students with special needs in an inclusion setting.
  • Respects the confidentiality of the teacher, students, and parents.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of school routines, emergency procedures, and school discipline policy.
  • Provides instructional classroom coverage during emergencies or when the teacher is absent.
  • Monitors and directs students in hallways, cafeteria during lunch, and playground/classroom during recess to ensure safety and appropriate behavior according to ACS standards.
  • Performs clerical duties such as preparing lesson materials, maintaining supplies inventory, sending faxes, operating office equipment, and answering the telephone as needed.
  • Covers any other assignments as requested by the Principal or supervising teacher.

Requirements

  • 48 college credits, ParaPro Assessment, or WorkKeys certificate required.
  • Previous experience working in an education setting preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to relate well to others.

Additional Requirements

  • Attends professional development and staff meetings on scheduled days.
  • Follows school-wide classroom protocols and school rituals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Principal and receives direction from the supervising teacher.
