About the Program
Integrates a system of Intelligent Transportation devices to monitor traffic, notify motorists of incidents like crashes or roadwork, and provide real-time updates through signs, social media, and other tools. By offering Freeway Service Patrols and timely traffic alerts, travelers avoid delays, plan alternate routes, and stay safe while reducing congestion and improving response times.
About the Role
The TRIMARC Traffic Operations Center is a 24/7/365 environment. TRIMARC operators assess all incoming traffic data and determine in real time the content and priority of traffic reports to be disseminated. Operators accurately process large volumes of data from a wide variety of sources and serve as the principal contact for many agencies and members of the public. They routinely communicate with emergency service personnel and transportation officials representing various agencies in the TRIMARC region. The operator's telephone manners and image directly reflect on the image of the TOC and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
Schedule
The TOC operator may work various shifts and may be required to work weekends, holidays, and fill in on other shifts as needed. The main shift for this role will be Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Responsibilities
- Monitoring automated traffic management system, including checking road sensor data and double-checking video surveillance systems and mobile units to confirm data
- Watching Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) video monitors
- Monitoring emergency frequency scanners
- Communicating effectively with the public and government agencies
- Maintaining radio communications with Freeway Service Patrols
- Maintaining radio and telephone communications with PSAs
- Crosschecking static databases regarding construction and special events
- Providing written reports as required
- Performing other ancillary duties as determined by the Operations Manager
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 1 year of experience
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Familiarity with computer applications, e.g., typical office software suites
- Ability to multi-task information from multiple diverse simultaneous inputs, including automated road sensor data, emergency frequency scanners, two-way radios, CCTV cameras, aircraft, and computer databases
- Good vision – must be able to read items on a computer screen and CCTV cameras
- Good hearing – ability to hear two-way radio communication
- Ability to use office equipment including personal computers and their software
- Ability to type accurately
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to work calmly and accurately under pressure
- Ability to wear safety equipment
- Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in Traffic Operations
- Knowledge of municipality and area traffic management organizations, including state, metro, and local emergency services
- Knowledge of metropolitan roadways including their multiple or alternate names, under whose jurisdiction they fall, where that jurisdiction changes, and what alternate routes exist
- National Traffic Incident Management (TIM) certified
Pay
Target salary range: $30,000 - $48,000. Salary is determined by various factors, including the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual's experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
