About the Role

Performs patient care under the physician’s or nurse’s direct supervision. Duties include preparing patients for physicians, administering and recording diagnostic laboratory test results, and entering information into the patient’s electronic or written chart. Ensures the medical record is accurate, complete, and meets medical coding requirements. Assists in coordinating care to meet patient needs.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with members of the health care team in coordinating and implementing plans for patient care; may record reason for visit and related patient information for practitioner review.
  • Enters and documents information from the patient visit into the patient's electronic medical record or written chart.
  • Performs vital signs, height, weight, and screening procedures (e.g., head circumference, audiometry, vision testing) and documents findings in the medical record.
  • Collects and assists providers in collecting specimens using appropriate protocols such as infection control; completes requisitions, labels, and routes specimens according to standard procedure.
  • Performs and documents daily controls and calibration of laboratory equipment when needed; informs the supervisor of inaccurate controls.
  • Performs electrocardiograms and phlebotomy in accordance with provider orders; adheres to infection control standards (e.g., hand hygiene, PPE, isolation of patients with known infectious diseases, equipment disinfection/sterilization).
  • Assists physicians and nurses with special procedures and examinations (e.g., lumbar puncture, pelvic exam) following protocols such as infection control, universal protocol, and patient identification; secures supplies, ensures proper patient draping, provides instruments, and assists post-procedure.
  • Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of examination rooms; stocks assigned rooms and cupboards, ensures par levels of supplies, and completes required logs (e.g., refrigerator logs, eyewash logs, sample medications, AED, suction).
  • May participate in pre-visit chart preparation by ensuring required lab results and documentation are available for practitioner review (for practices using paper medical records).
  • Performs clerical functions such as filing medical records, processing insurance forms, preparing financial records, photocopying, answering phones, and ensuring efficient patient flow.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of a six-month to one-year course in Medical Assisting at an approved school.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, CPT, and ICD-9 coding.
