About the Role
The Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of Pennsylvania announces a full-time Lecturer position in the Arabic Language Program starting in Fall 2026. The appointment will be for an initial year with the possibility of annual renewal for up to two additional years, contingent upon a satisfactory performance review and approval of the Dean. Requirements
- Master’s degree (PhD preferred) in Arabic Language, Literature, Linguistics, or TAFL
- Native or near-native competency in Arabic and fluency in English
- Authorization to work in the United States
Qualifications
- Significant teaching experience at all levels of Arabic language at post-secondary North American institutions
- Experience working within large Arabic language programs with multiple members collaborating on a shared vision
- Demonstrated proficiency in current second/foreign language teaching methodologies (e.g., content-based instruction, proficiency-based learning, flipped classroom with a focus on language activation and feedback)
- Meaningful application of technologies in language instruction
- Commitment to professional development and staying current with developments in second language acquisition, particularly in Arabic
- Interest in advancing the study of Arabic language and culture, interdisciplinary research, and collaboration
Responsibilities
- Teach five Arabic language classes per academic year at assigned levels
- Hold regular office hours
- Participate in program events and attend meetings of the Arabic Language Program
- Collaborate with faculty to develop and design curriculum and evaluate teaching goals, student outcomes, and programmatic effectiveness
- Engage in professional development and contribute to a culturally vibrant intellectual community
