Full-time Groundskeeper I

Under direct supervision of the Senior Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, Crew Leader, or Groundskeeper II, this position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the care and maintenance of park grounds and related building facilities, as assigned. The position may involve work related to park renovation and improvement projects.

Schedule

Starting and ending times for maintenance crews vary: 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., or 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Position may be required to work weekends for two years and may be required to work holidays.

Responsibilities

• Performs general landscape maintenance within parks and open space areas
• Operation of various power mowing and edging equipment
• Pest and weed control spraying, and the application of various fertilizers
• Weeding, brush clearing, and tree pruning
• Minor sprinkler system repair
• Landscape installation and construction
• Ball field preparation
• Equestrian and trail maintenance
• Graffiti and trash removal
• Minor maintenance of the equipment used
• Cleaning and upkeep of park building facilities (restrooms)
• Performs other related work as assigned

Requirements

• Adequate proficiency in reading, understanding, and speaking basic English
• Minimum one (1) year of experience in grounds maintenance, landscape installation, or other related experience
• Level of knowledge, skill, and ability in grounds maintenance to contribute meaningfully to the District's goal of providing well-maintained parks
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently
• Ability to sustain an acceptable level of productivity
• Valid California driver's license and good driving record
• CA Certified Applicator's Certificate is desired

Physical Demands

• Walking or standing 90% of the time or more
• Occasional to frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching overhead or stretching, and working on uneven terrain
• Occasional crawling or climbing ladders and/or stairs
• Some lifting of 100 pounds or more and occasional to frequent lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling loads of 0-100 pounds
• Frequent handling and dexterity
• Operation of equipment including power mowers, edgers, blowers, weed eater, tractor, rototiller, sprayer, chain saw, stump grinder, trencher, and District vehicle
