Responsibilities
- Facilitate meaningful learning of program and course competencies while proactively supporting all aspects of the learning environment in alignment with South University’s mission and CACREP standards.
- Provide education through learning-centered instruction that prepares graduates to meet evolving marketplace needs.
- Encourage a culture of learning that values mutual responsibility, respect, lifelong learning, ethics, and personal and professional development.
- Ensure the South University philosophy is reflected in all duties: quality service to clients; employee development, growth, involvement, and recognition; sound economic principles; and an environment conducive to innovation, positive thinking, and expansion.
Essential Functions
- Provide competency-based education aligned with South University’s curricular model and delivery style, consistent with CACREP standards.
- Instruct the equivalent of 4 courses per quarter, which may include didactic courses, tutoring, comprehensive exam management, practicum/internship supervision, or other activities as approved by the Program Director and/or Department Chair.
- Design and deliver class instruction by developing instructional plans that meet course competencies, support lesson objectives, and deliver approved instruction.
- Enable achievement of pre-described exit competencies by fostering student competencies and establishing performance criteria and evaluation methods.
- Deliver learning-centered instruction by creating a classroom environment conducive to learning and student involvement, planning and preparing effectively for classes, and supporting student success.
- Promote student success by demonstrating flexibility in teaching style and work schedule, showing passion for teaching and students, and engaging students in the learning process.
- Collect data for Key Performance Indicator assignments, submit quarterly student evaluation forms for all students, and participate in formal student evaluations as outlined in the Graduate Student Handbook.
- Participate in required faculty development annually.
- Maintain the learning environment by keeping accurate records, submitting grades, syllabi, final exams, and other reports on time, and enforcing academic and attendance policies.
- Contribute to a learning culture by serving on curriculum and system task forces, supporting campus events such as orientation and graduation, and participating in workshops and meetings.
- Relate professional, life, and industry experience to learning through ongoing professional and technical skill development, integrating industry perspectives into courses, and staying current with professional trends and opportunities.
- Perform other responsibilities as determined by the Campus Dean of Academic Affairs and Retention, Campus Director, Department Chair, or College Dean.
Requirements
- Earned doctoral degree in a counselor education program, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program, or a related doctoral degree with at least one full academic year of prior full-time faculty experience in a counselor education program before July 1, 2013.
- Minimum of 1–2 years’ experience as instructor of record in master’s and/or doctorate-level clinical mental health counseling instruction at a post-secondary or college institution.
- Membership in a professional association tied to the counseling profession.
- Evidence of sustained professional development and renewal activities related to counseling, as well as professional service and advocacy in the field.
- Ability to read, understand, write, interpret, and implement accreditation criteria and state agency regulations.
- Ability to teach in a manner that meets CACREP standards while using real-world and current scenarios to discuss counseling theories and standards without engendering classroom conflict.
- Ability to resolve inquiries and complaints from employees, students, regulatory agencies, or members of the academic or business community.
- Ability to effectively present information to faculty, academic and campus leaders, university leaders, and public groups.
- Ability to develop and complete projects without continued direct supervision.
- Experience with computerized administrative systems and proficiency with standard office applications on personal computers.
