About the role
The Medication Technician plays an integral role in the success of our team, our community, and creating a place our residents are proud to call home. The primary purpose of this position is to administer medications within the scope of your license and provide assigned residents with daily resident care and services as directed or instructed, in accordance with an established care plan.
Responsibilities
- Administer medications according to health care provider instructions following the Medication Administration Record and within the scope of your license.
- Maintain accurate documentation of medication administration, effectiveness, and any noted side effects, reporting adverse reactions or side effects to the supervisor or Director of Nursing.
- Perform personal care activities including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, skin/nail care, oral hygiene, shaving, and others as directed.
- Assist in dining rooms to provide resident care and monitoring.
- Initiate and participate in leisure activities for residents; encourage socialization and participation in planned activities or programs.
- Observe and report the health and emotional condition of each resident, promptly reporting all changes to the nurse.
- Respond promptly and courteously to resident requests for assistance.
- Promote personal safety and a safe environment for residents by observing infection control, fire safety, hazardous materials, and other safety practices, following facility guidelines, and reporting unsafe situations.
- Assist residents in preparing for appointments and social programs.
- Assist residents to walk with or without self-help devices as instructed.
- Check each resident routinely to ensure personal care needs are being met.
- Provide physical support to assist residents with daily living activities, such as transferring, getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, standing, walking, or exercising.
- Serve and assist with meals, and take vital signs.
- Observe and document the health, behavior, physical, and emotional condition of each resident, promptly reporting changes to the nurse.
- Respond promptly to resident call signals, bells, or intercom systems to determine residents' needs.
- Communicate with nurses on resident conditions, changes, and concerns.
- Provide companionship, comfort, and support to residents.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must meet all applicable state and federal requirements for this position.
- Prefer 6 months or more of experience in a home care, assisted living, or long-term care facility.
- Ability to make independent decisions and follow instructions.
- Deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the public.
- Capable of working with ill, disabled, elderly, and emotionally upset individuals.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, residents, and families.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Tasks may involve potential and/or direct exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, air contaminants, and hazardous chemicals.
- Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds; moving, lifting, or transferring residents may involve lifting up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry patients.
- Ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles over time without fatigue.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, sit, and reach.
- Fine motor skills.
- Executes tasks independently.
- Ability to express yourself clearly and effectively verbally.
- Ability to concentrate on moderate details with frequent interruptions.
- Visual acuity and hearing alertness.
- Ambient room temperatures and lighting.
