About the Role
The Cook plays an integral role in the success of our team and community, helping create a place residents are proud to call home. This position focuses on preparing cold food, bakery, and salad items while ensuring meals are palatable, appetizing, and compliant with food safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Prepare meals following established menus and recipes, ensuring taste, temperature, and presentation meet standards.
- Inspect special diet trays to confirm correct meals are served to residents.
- Serve food in accordance with portion control procedures.
- Prepare food for therapeutic diets based on planned menus and special diet orders.
- Prepare cold items, bakery goods, and salads, as well as hot foods as directed by supervisors.
- Adhere to culinary practices, procedures, and food safety regulations, including Food ServSafe standards.
- Follow food service timelines and prepare authorized food substitutions for residents who refuse menu options.
- Serve meals to residents and guests as needed.
- Assist in food preparation for special meals, parties, and events.
- Maintain clean and safe work areas, including proper storage of incoming food and supplies.
- Assist with food prep for upcoming meals and inventory/replenishment of food and supplies.
- Ensure food and supplies for the next meal are readily available.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must meet all applicable state and federal requirements for the position.
- Six months of experience in a commercial kitchen preferred.
- Ability to cook large quantities of food with minimal direction.
- Knowledge of culinary practices, procedures, and food safety.
- Capable of making independent decisions and following instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, residents, and families.
- Experience working with ill, disabled, elderly, or emotionally upset individuals in a facility setting.
- Tactful interaction with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and government agencies.
Physical Demands
- Frequently lift/carry up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
- Frequently push/pull up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
- Bending, twisting, stooping, and reaching at or below shoulder level.
- Frequent standing or walking.
Cognitive & Environmental Requirements
- Ability to execute tasks independently and express ideas clearly.
- Potential exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, air contaminants, and hazardous chemicals.
- May be exposed to heat from kitchen equipment, cold from freezers, and outdoor weather conditions (e.g., BBQ).
- Moderate noise levels in the work environment.
