About the role

The Outagamie County Jail is hiring Full Time Correctional Officers to provide supervision of inmates to maintain a safe and secure environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts required physical checks of inmates and cell areas, watching for safety and security threats while verifying inmate location.
  • Takes action required to maintain safety and security.
  • Makes sure inmate living areas are clean, safe, and secure.
  • Monitors recreational, educational, and program activities.
  • Distributes meals, canteen, mail, uniforms, bedding, and other supplies to inmates.
  • Escorts inmates to and from visits, programs, etc.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of inmate counts, status changes, activities, events, etc.
  • Writes cogent, readable, thorough reports when notable incidents occur.
  • Restraints hostile and non-compliant inmates as necessary.
  • Uses minimal amount of force to gain compliance as trained when necessary.
  • Responds to emergency situations according to department policies and procedures.
  • Takes custody of, books, and releases inmates according to department policy.
  • Obtains and records appropriate information.
  • Controls access to and from jail.
  • Monitors inmates via GPS tracking device.
  • Greets, checks ID, documents visitors.
  • Conducts active law enforcement measures within the jail setting.
  • Protects others, reacts calmly and professionally during emergencies.
  • Maintains physical conditioning and follows safety protocols.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • To become Wisconsin Corrections Certified within the first year of employment.
  • Successful completion of physical agility test, psychological test, post-offer physical evaluation, and/or other tests to determine fitness for employment.

Skills

  • Knowledge of, and ability to use, computer software and applications used by department.
  • Operate general office equipment such as copy and fax machines.
  • Meet department standards of physical condition.
  • Effectively communicate in English.
  • Perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Work overtime / extra hours as necessary.
  • Handle frequent exposure to high degrees of danger.
  • Maintain a high degree of physical conditioning.
