About the role

The Arc Eastern Connecticut has been providing services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1960. We are a licensed and contracted service provider of the Connecticut Department of Development Services. We offer residential, daytime, employment, and social support services.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures confidentiality as required by law, The Arc ECT, and DDS policies and procedures.
  • Presents staff in-services relating to medications and nursing issues.
  • Ensures compliance with all state and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Provides nursing care in post-acute care facilities.
  • Checks vital signs such as blood pressure and pulse and provides regular reports to the broader nursing team.
  • Observes the conditions of residents on an ongoing basis, alerting supervising staff to any concerns or emergencies.
  • Helps residents perform activities of daily living (ADLs), such as toileting, grooming, personal hygiene, and feeding.
  • Ambulates, turns, and positions residents. Provides fresh water and nourishment between meals.
  • Changes linens, sanitizes surfaces, and performs other tasks to provide a clean and sanitary environment for residents.
  • Serves as an important go-between for residents and healthcare staff.
  • Stays engaged with residents and offers daily companionship and comfort.
  • Communicates with family members and other visitors and helps to address their concerns.
  • Moves residents safely and comfortably to and from exam tables, beds, and wheelchairs, repositions them as needed.
  • Administers enemas, douches, nonsterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, sitz and therapeutic baths, and applies restraints.
  • Installs confidence in residents by maintaining a neat appearance and performing duties in a competent and caring manner.
  • Reports observations of participants to the nurse caring for the resident to ensure professional assessment.

Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with people who have developmental and physical disabilities preferred.
  • Must have the ability to mentor and assist people in all areas of life skills including recreation, independence, communication, and health.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • High School Diploma or GED Required.
  • Applicants must possess basic computer aptitude and be able to speak/write in English.
  • Experienced with Department of Developmental Services regulations, forms, and protocols.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Current State of CT CNA License.
  • Knowledge of medical terms and basic nursing care procedures.
  • Strong observational skills and a high level of attention to details.
  • Will be required to participate in lifts, transfers, and behavioral or physical intervention during emergency situations.
  • May be exposed to the risk of injury or exposure to occupational health hazards.
  • The CNA must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
