Cat & Dog Care Specialist

The Kauai Humane Society (KHS) seeks full-time positions for Cat & Dog Care Specialists. The Cat & Dog Care Specialist role involves feeding, cleaning, and providing enrichment to cats and dogs at KHS. This person also showcases animals to potential adopters and helps write animal biographies or provide information to other staff members to promote adoptions.

• Feeding and watering cats and dogs at established times every day
• Ensuring opportunities for elimination and cleaning
• Providing exercise and enrichment activities
• Bathing and grooming dogs and grooming cats as needed
• Disinfecting or spot cleaning animal cages daily
• Cleaning and ensuring disinfection of animal equipment
• Organizing and decluttering animal areas
• Aiding in showcasing cats and dogs to potential adopters
• Assisting with dog-to-dog introductions
• Inputting information into online shelter software
• Supporting staff in running dog playgroups and preparing/enrichment items
• Providing basic care and cleaning for Boarding customers' pets

Qualifications

• High School graduate or GED equivalent preferred, suitable work experience in lieu of education considered for adults over 18 years of age
• Experience handling cats and dogs, such as volunteering at an animal shelter or pet sitting for friends and family, is strongly preferred
• Competency in using Google Suite products (Gmail, Google Docs and Sheets) or Microsoft Word and Excel is strongly preferred
• Basic computer skills and the ability to check and respond to email daily is required
• Demonstrated ability to work well interacting with the public is required

Essential Job Functions

• Ensure cats and dogs receive basic care
• Perform duties at established times every day
• Handle dogs of varying sizes, breeds, and temperaments confidently
• Chase or run after animals that might escape confinement

Physical Requirements

• Able to work with both dogs and cats of varying sizes, breeds, and temperaments
• Able to stand, walk, bend, and stoop frequently and daily to perform duties
• Able to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances
• Able to chase or run after animals that might escape confinement

Wage and Benefits

The wage starts at $18.33/hour. Benefits include 401(k) matching, dental and health insurance, employee discount, flexible schedule, paid time off, and vision insurance.
