About the Role

Assists the Merchandising Manager and Distribution Manager in the placement of goods on the sales floor for the SDSU Bookstore and satellite operations (Imperial Valley Campus Bookstore, Athletic venues). Responsibilities include assisting with inventory control, floor moves, and creating window displays. Also assists in the management of part-time employees in the merchandising area.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in developing training workshops for employees on visual merchandise standards.
  • Assists in the planning and execution of merchandise-driven events.
  • Assists in the supervision of part-time employees, including setting work priorities, conducting staff meetings, coordinating sales training, and evaluating performance and disciplining employees.
  • Assists in planning, replenishment, and rotation of merchandise for all categories, with a focus on apparel, gifts, and computers/electronics.
  • Assists in planning and execution of major floor moves, utilizing floor plans and working with the Merchandising Manager and Distribution Manager.
  • Attends selected sporting events to gain knowledge of customer demands.
  • Works closely with the Merchandising Manager, Distribution Manager, and General Merchandise department to plan for incoming merchandise and space allocation, including weekly walk-throughs for rotation/space planning.
  • Assists with the stock replenishment program for all locations, including athletic venues.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the sign and fixture libraries.
  • Partners with the Graphics and Marketing team to create window displays and signage.
  • Assists in planning and implementing promotional efforts and communicating these efforts/plans to store personnel.
  • Enforces compliance with security regulations and internal controls (e.g., loss prevention).
  • Ensures the merchandise area has the necessary supplies and materials to operate effectively.
  • May perform the work of subordinates during busy periods.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with customers, coworkers, vendors, student organizations, faculty, staff, and University personnel.
  • Complies with and ensures continued, consistent compliance with all company policies, and federal, state, and local laws/regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • 1-2 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Retail experience/knowledge preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret general business information, governmental regulations, and technical/trade journals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and develop solutions/strategies.
  • Good analytical, quantitative, organizational, and management skills.
  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and computers.
  • Physical ability to lift or carry heavy objects up to 50 pounds.

Pay

$26.00–$29.00 per hour. This represents the good faith estimate of the hourly wage range we reasonably expect to pay for this position upon hire, depending on factors such as the selected candidate's experience, training, education, job-related skills, internal equity, and operational needs. In select cases, and depending on market conditions or exceptional candidate qualifications, compensation may exceed this range, provided it aligns with applicable law and our compensation policies.

Schedule

Must be available to work a flexible schedule based on operational needs, including opening, mid-day, and closing shifts, as well as night shifts, weekends, and holidays throughout the year.

The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act. A background check will be conducted after a conditional offer of employment is extended and must be satisfactorily completed prior to beginning work.
