About the Department
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at UTEP offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, as well as a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The department has 25 faculty members, enrolls more than 900 students and supports over $5.5 million in annual sponsored research expenditures (FY 2025). ECE faculty conduct research in laboratories and research centers across the department, college, and university.
Departmental facilities include a 6,000-square-foot cleanroom with Class 100 and Class 1000 spaces supporting semiconductor fabrication and characterization, including nanoscale 3D printing, thin-film deposition, plasma etching, photolithography, microscopy, spectroscopy, and electrical characterization. Additional departmental research infrastructure includes advanced additive manufacturing facilities featuring metal, polymer, and multi-process 3D printing systems, as well as access to the UTEP Keck Center for 3D Innovation. The department also maintains strong capabilities for microwave, millimeter-wave, and antenna research, including an anechoic chamber, instrumentation supporting measurements up to 40 GHz, and industry-standard design and simulation tools such as Ansys HFSS. In addition, the Wireless Communications Testbed supports research in wireless communications, software-defined radio, wireless security, spectrum characterization, telecommunications systems, and 4G/5G networks.
