Responsibilities

  • Participates in inventories of wildlife and their habitats.
  • Collects data on wildlife habitat conditions and age, species location, breeding status, species condition.
  • Participates in construction projects such as water developments and fencing.
  • Compiles and organizes survey data, prepares narratives and reports; enters and receives data from automated databases.
  • Works with range, lands, recreation, wild horse, and other programs to improve or repair infrastructure.
  • Helps other technicians/aids in collecting field data and completing required projects.

Requirements

  • Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Direct Deposit participation required.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement (08/19/2026).

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following:

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience includes activities such as banding, tagging, and releasing wildlife; inventorying rare and endangered species habitat based on guidelines.
  • Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to this position.
  • Equivalent Combination: A combination of experience and education that together equal 100% of the qualification standards listed above.

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors. Volunteer experience (paid or unpaid) is also creditable.

If substituting education for experience, you must submit a copy of your transcript(s). Transcripts must include your name, school name, grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, and date the degree was conferred. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for application, but official transcripts will be required if selected.

For education completed outside the United States, you must provide proof of equivalency through a recognized organization.

Additional Information

This position is filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within a 50-mile radius of the Southeastern States District Office (273 Market Street, Flowood, Mississippi 39232) at the time of application. Proof of residency (e.g., mortgage, lease, utility bill) is required.

Non-competitive rehire eligibility is available for temporary seasonal employees, provided they work no more than a combined total of 1,560 hours within their established service year. Exceeding this limit may result in loss of rehire eligibility.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to funding fluctuations, project needs, or performance considerations.

Physical Demands

  • Work requires physical exertion, including bending and walking in rough, rocky, mountainous, or densely vegetated terrain.
  • Required to lift and carry equipment, tools, personal protective gear, food, and water for extended periods away from vehicles.

Working Conditions

  • Office work is performed in adequately lighted, ventilated, and climate-controlled environments.
  • Fieldwork exposes employees to cuts, bruises, extreme weather, pests, and wildlife-related discomforts.
  • Adherence to all safety rules is mandatory.
