About the role

The Fuel and Ash Handler I monitors and operates auxiliary equipment to maintain safe, efficient, and continuous plant operations. This role performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs to ash handling, tipping floor, and other assigned auxiliary systems, and operates ash handling equipment and loads metals as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Operates mobile equipment including industrial forklifts, manlifts, skid steer type loaders, and other mobile equipment.
  • Operates and completes all inspections on frontend loader on the Tipping Floor and in Ash House areas.
  • Qualified to operate refuse crane and front-end loader as required in support and employee relief capacity.
  • Applies mechanical knowledge and skills to perform routine tasks such as opening vessels and equipment access doors, placing and removing furnace access equipment, overhead protection and staging, operating power tools, and performing minor repairs to plant equipment and structures.
  • Maintains and follows all Company environmental compliance, health and safety requirements, policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Uses 15,000 psi water blaster systems for cleaning, drain clearing, and other activities as assigned following competency training.
  • Uses mobile water pumps including diesel operated, gasoline powered, pneumatic, and hydraulic.
  • Performs MSW ash dewatering evolutions and compliant ash handling.
  • Follows standard safety procedures; corrects safety and environmental hazards and reports them to supervision immediately.
  • Works overtime and/or rotating shifts as required.
  • Shovels loose materials such as sand, gravel, metals, plastics, or chemicals into machine hoppers or into vehicles and containers such as wheelbarrows, scrap trucks, or barrels.
  • Maintains a positive work environment by acting and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with customers, clients, vendors, co-workers, and management.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent work experience.
  • Mechanical abilities sufficient to perform equipment maintenance, minor repairs, and general preventative maintenance.

  • Noise: Work environment may be noisy.
  • Physical Demand:
    • Stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
    • Walk, handle tools and equipment, and use fine motor skills.
    • Reach with hands and arms, climb and walk on heights often greater than 4 feet.
    • Stoop, kneel, bend, push, pull, and crawl.
    • Ascend and descend stairs and stationary vertical ladders as part of normal work activity and emergency egress situations.
    • Lift up to 50 lbs.
    • Move about all areas of the plant, including catwalks, deck grating, and uneven surfaces.
    • Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception (corrected or otherwise).
    • Operate a 1.5-inch fire hose at 125 psi line pressure to extinguish fires.
    • Operate fire extinguishing equipment ranging from handheld extinguishers to 200 lb portable units.
    • Access confined spaces and pressure vessels through standard 12" by 16" manways.
  • PPE Required: Work in areas under adverse conditions may require the donning and use of personal protective equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Negative pressure respirator
    • Positive pressure respirator
    • Self-contained breathing apparatus (steel or composite bottle)
    • Hardhat
    • Approved safety shoes
    • Eye protection
    • Rubber suit and gloves
    • Chemical resistant suit
    • Heat resistant outerwear
    • Flame resistant outerwear
    • Approved hearing protection

    • Safety harness
