About the role
The Athletic Director at Shaw University is responsible for providing visionary leadership, strategic planning, and policy development for the athletics program. They must maintain a committed athletics program aligned with the university's mission and strategic priorities, raise funds for the athletic department, administer the athletic budget, recruit and manage the coaching staff, and ensure compliance with all relevant policies, rules, and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Selects and retains qualified subordinate personnel to ensure quality external/internal customer satisfaction through ongoing support, training, supervision, coaching, counseling, and performance review.
- Administers and directly oversees the financial operations of the athletic department, formulating budget guidelines, approving budget appropriations for each area of sports, and monitoring compliance with the budget as approved by the University Board.
- Coordinates with Institutional Advancement to develop a comprehensive fundraising plan, including operational and capital fundraising initiatives, and promotes annual giving, gifts, and special gifts.
- Assists the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) in investigating violations and clarifying conflicts of opinion with the President of the University.
- Serves as the primary spokesperson for the Department, promoting the philosophy of the intercollegiate athletics program with various stakeholders.
- Supervises and controls marketing and promotions functions, approves requests for athletic scholarship awards, coordinates activities/communication within the CIAA conference and NCAA, and oversees the design of an organizational structure for achieving departmental goals and objectives.
- Works with the University's Title IX officer and Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance to ensure compliance with Title IX guidelines, assists or advises coaches with sport-specific issues, and establishes operational policies.
- Supervises grant-in-aid distribution for all sports and oversees the process of initial and annual renewal/non-renewal of athletic grants-in-aid.
- Attends national, regional, and conference meetings as the spokesperson for the athletic program.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning required; Master’s preferred.
- Ten years demonstrated extensive and successful experience in Athletics, higher education administration and management.
- Five years of successful supervisory/management experience, preferably in higher education.
- Demonstrated experience in accreditation standards in higher education.
- Demonstrated fundraising & development for both operational & capital needs.
- Budget management.
- Visionary and forward-thinking problem-solver.
- High business and personal ethical standards.
- Calm; thoughtful under pressure.
- Licensed to legally operate an automobile in the State of North Carolina.
