In 1958, the citizens of Muenster built a new hospital after dissatisfaction with available medical services. J.M. Weinzapfel donated the land and led the effort, and in 1960, the Benedictine Order of Sisters committed to providing nurses. Sister Mildred Felderhoff served as the first hospital administrator.

About the Role

Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides delegated care from licensed nursing personnel to patients, and assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment. Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides general aspects of care that meet psychosocial, physical condition, and age-specific needs within the nursing assistant’s scope of practice.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, oxygen saturation, and intake-output.
  • Provides general nursing care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan, commode, and ambulating patients.
  • Provides morning/evening care, including bathing, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning over-bed table and bedside stand, straightening room, and other general care as necessary throughout the shift.
  • Prepares patients for meals; serves and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds patients if necessary.
  • Distributes drinking water and snacks to patients as applicable.
  • Answers patients' call lights, anticipates patients' needs, and makes rounds of assigned patients.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate to licensed personnel any observed changes in patient status and responses, including complaints of pain.
  • Maintains awareness of the needs of pediatric, geriatric, and general patient populations.
  • Provides explanations to patients and families prior to administering care; answers questions within scope of practice.
  • Under the direction of a supervising nurse, performs basic clinical skills including assisting with wound care, glucometer readings, EKG, and oxygen therapy.
  • Assists with patient admissions, discharge, and transfers.
  • Meets current documentation standards and policies and completes documentation within the shift.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Certified Nurse’s Aide certification preferred.
  • Current BLS certification required (will be provided if needed).
  • One year of experience in direct patient care preferred.

Skills

  • General knowledge of electronic equipment, computer hardware, and software.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Active listening, critical thinking, oral comprehension, and time management skills.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Exerting 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently.
  • May involve exerting in excess of 100 lbs. of force in some situations.
  • Up to 20 lbs. of force to constantly move objects.
