About the role
The Correctional Officer I is responsible for the security, health, welfare and safety of inmates in the County's jail facility, and the effective delivery of correctional services through the observance of all federal and state laws, county ordinances, correctional policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Supervise inmates and enforce rules and regulations to ensure security of assigned area and personnel.
- Perform well‑being checks.
- Search cells and inmates.
- Perform booking and release duties.
- Record medical information and maintain applicable documents.
- Provide credible and effective testimony in court and elsewhere.
- Administer medication.
- Respond to medical emergencies within the facility.
- Keep accurate logs and update files.
- Screen inmates for behaviors, attitudes, and interests; record medical information and property brought into the jail.
- Conduct daily indiscriminate strip searches of work release inmates upon return from work.
- Monitor volunteers providing activities for inmates.
- See to the daily needs of inmates.
- Act as bailiff for court and make occasional transports.
- Receive training in federal, state, and local laws as they apply to law enforcement and detention facilities.
- Complete Predatory Offender Registration Checks.
- Attend trainings and maintain professional knowledge; complete all required online and in‑person training.
- Read, acknowledge, and comply with jail policies in the Policy Manual and any revisions.
Qualifications
Education: Minimum qualification is a combination of high school diploma and preferred 2 or more years of related experience. Obtain all required Correctional Officer State Licenses/Certifications within 12 months of position hire date.
Requirements
- Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.
- Successfully complete a background check and criminal history review.
- First Responder training (48 hours).
- First Responder Refresher Course every two years (16 hours).
- BCA Teletype Certification (24 hours).
- BCA Re‑Certification test every two years.
- Defensive Tactics training yearly (4 hours).
- Use of Force training yearly (4 hours).
- Taser Training yearly (1 hour).
- Medication Distribution Training (8 hours).
- Medication Re‑Certification every two years (2 hours).
