About the role
Hannaford Supermarkets started out as a fresh produce vendor in Portland, Maine in 1883 and remains rooted in local markets. The company actively partners with local farmers and producers through its Local program, which supports local foods, farmland preservation, local traditions, and local jobs. Hannaford was the first major U.S. supermarket to document that all its seafood products were sustainably harvested.
The Management Trainee program is designed to equip future managers with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in this role. Department assignments will be based on store needs.
Responsibilities
- Observe and follow all company policies and established standard practices.
- Manage department operations in the absence of the department manager, in accordance with established standards.
- Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance and comply with the company’s personal appearance policy.
- Recognize and coach associates to meet service expectations.
- Understand and use company tools such as financial reports, scheduling, productivity, ordering, and business information systems.
- Maintain clear communication within the department, with the store manager, and throughout the organization.
- Ensure merchandising techniques and layouts align with company standards.
- Uphold department compliance with pricing and coding policies.
- Work within company management planning guidelines to maintain productivity.
- Support company safety standards and report equipment repairs or maintenance needs.
- Keep work areas free from debris and safety hazards.
- Develop product knowledge in all areas of the assigned department, including product preparation.
- Have a full understanding of the department’s Standard Practice manual.
- Ensure proper training of all assigned department associates.
- Uphold company sanitation and food safety standards.
- Maintain the quality of the department’s appearance and presentation.
- Treat all associates with fairness, dignity, and respect; provide recognition and feedback as needed.
- Perform all special projects and duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to lead and direct others.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn multiple tasks and technical requirements of the job.
- Good interpersonal skills and desire to work in a team environment.
- Must meet minimum age requirements to comply with company policy.
- Effective communication and customer service skills.
Physical Requirements
- Lift cases or packages of products weighing 1–40 lb. frequently and 100 lb. on occasion.
- Meet established volume activity standards.
- Stand or walk 100% of the time.
- Perform repetitive grasping, twisting, reaching, and hand/arm motions.
- Handle a variety of substances associated with cleaning and packaging materials.
- Use hands continuously to feel objects and use tools and equipment to cut and prepare products.
- Frequent bending.
Preferred Requirements
- Role model outstanding, friendly customer service and use skills and knowledge to offer solutions that meet or exceed customers’ expectations.
- Direct the workflow of assigned department associates.
- Ensure product produced meets company standards.
- Oversee assigned areas including rotation of all products.
- Process administrative paperwork and maintain accurate department records.
- Order and maintain inventory control to maximize sales and limit shrink issues.
- Use good judgment in delegation, assignment, and follow-up required for efficient performance.
- Maintain effectiveness of department’s staffing, scheduling, and financial results.
- Wash, rinse, and sanitize equipment as outlined by company practices.
- Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
Pay
Salary range is between $17.35 and $24.75 per hour.
