FSP Associate Scientist: Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutics

About the role

Join Thermo Fisher Scientific’s PPD® Laboratory Services team and contribute directly to improving patient health through clinical laboratory testing. As an Associate Scientist, you will oversee laboratory operations, ensure accuracy and reliability of results, manage and mentor staff, and uphold high standards of quality and compliance. This role offers hands-on experience in early-phase clinical trial material delivery within a collaborative and innovative environment.

Responsibilities

• Conduct powder handling operations for solid dosage form development, including weighing, sieving, blending, granulation, milling, powder compaction, and film coating using bench-scale and at-scale equipment.
• Perform in-process testing and characterization of powder and compact properties, such as flowability, density, mechanical characterization, disintegration testing, and other relevant assessments.
• Execute manufacturing operations for solid oral dosage forms (tablets and capsules) by following Batch Records and SOPs.
• Maintain accurate, real-time documentation in Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs), batch records, and other data management systems.
• Perform data processing and analysis using tools such as Excel, statistical software, or Python scripts.
• Adhere strictly to laboratory safety protocols, equipment handling procedures, and SOPs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field.
• 0 to 1 years of relevant experience (or a combination of education, training, and directly related experience).
• Proficiency in following complex experimental protocols and batch records without deviation.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for documentation and data management.
• Knowledge and hands-on experience in powder processing, handling, and characterization is highly desired.
• Strong background in applied mathematics and core engineering principles is advantageous.
• Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to maintain focus and quality during routine tasks while meeting deadlines under pressure.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills for accurate data recording and reporting.
• Ability to thrive in collaborative, fast-paced settings and contribute to cross-disciplinary project teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with solid dosage form development and powder characterization.
• Prior hands-on experience in a 100% lab-based operational environment.

Environmental Conditions

• Work is performed in a laboratory and/or clinical environment with exposure to electrical office equipment.
• Occasional domestic travel and site visits.
• Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms.
• Rare exposure to skin and lung irritants, radiation, toxic materials, and hazardous waste.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) required, including safety glasses, gowning, gloves, lab coat, and ear plugs.
• Occasional exposure to fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work in an upright and/or stationary position for 6-8 hours per day.
• Repetitive hand movement for operating lab equipment.
• Occasional mobility, crouching, stooping, bending, and twisting of the upper body and neck.
• Light to moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15-20 lbs).
• Ability to use a variety of computer software, both in-house and off-the-shelf.
• Ability to communicate information clearly and work independently with minimal guidance.
• Frequent interaction with diverse groups to obtain or relay information.
• Ability to perform under stress, multi-task, and maintain regular attendance.

Pay

The hourly pay range for this position based in California is $32.89–$38.00. This position may also be eligible for a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and individual performance.
