Freelance Automotive Writer – Jalopnik

About the role

Jalopnik is a leading destination for transportation news, covering breaking industry updates, new vehicle releases, policy changes, and notable events. We report on enthusiast vehicles, automotive components, tires, and maintenance trends, as well as aircraft, watercraft, and other modes of transport. We’re seeking sharp, fast‑moving writers who can spot emerging stories, deliver accurate reporting on tight deadlines, and engage a passionate, transportation‑savvy audience. Two freelance paths are available:

• Automotive Writer – Evergreen content (300–900 words) addressing common reader questions. Consistent schedule of your choosing (10–40 hours/week). Pay $21–$25/hr (starting at $21/hr).
• Automotive Feature Writer – Deep‑dive, long‑form features (2,600+ words). No set schedule, minimum one feature per week. Pay $0.08–$0.10/word (starting at $0.08/word).

Responsibilities

• Claim and complete articles from a list of available assignments
• Deliver accurate, engaging content in a fast‑paced publishing environment
• Follow our style guide, editorial strategy, and publishing standards to ensure high‑quality content

Requirements

• At least 1 year of editorial or professional writing experience
• Experience covering vehicle technology, road safety, autonomous vehicles, industry trends, engine mechanics, and related topics
• Comfort working in a CMS
