Speeches, prayers and toasts were offered by prominent citizens of Des Moines County. The second toast of the day was made on behalf of "Old Des Moines, The Mother of Counties -- She welcomes to her maternal board the representatives of her daughters, Lee, Van Buren, Henry, Jefferson, Washington, Louisa, Muscatine and Scott."
