Forensic Healthcare Professional – Cleveland

We are looking for a Forensic Healthcare Professional to work in a custody suite covering Cleveland, alongside police officers to assess and treat individuals detained in Police Custody. Full training will be provided.

About the role

• Assess and address the health needs of detained persons, including mental health conditions, diabetes management, substance misuse, and head injuries.
• Conduct forensic medical examinations and gather evidence for use in the criminal justice system.
• Perform clinical assessments, identify and implement appropriate interventions, and collect forensic samples.
• Provide advice and guidance to ensure appropriate care is maintained for detainees.
• Maintain detailed and accurate records to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of detained persons.

This is a part-time position covering 21 hours per week, working overnight weekends only (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).

Responsibilities

• Deliver the requirements of the forensic practitioner service following the Codes of Practice of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and locally agreed protocols.
• Keep accurate, complete, and contemporaneous notes of work carried out, including recording injuries.
• Log all activities using the systems in use.
• Provide advice and support to Custody Officers in determining the healthcare needs of detainees and the priorities of care.
• Seek telephone advice and refer cases to the Consultant Forensic Medical Examiner (FME) when required.
• Provide a professional, responsive, and caring service to detained persons to support the Custody Sergeant and Officers in assessing healthcare needs.
• Determine an individual’s fitness to be detained, fitness to be released, fitness to be interviewed, and competence to understand charge.
• Assess alcohol and drug intoxication and withdrawal.

Requirements

• Registered Nurse (RGN) or Paramedic with a minimum of 3 years’ service.
• Full membership of the NMC or HCPC.
• Full UK driving license with access to your own vehicle for business use.
• Competent in oral and written English.
• Continuously resident in the UK for at least 3 years.
• Right to Work in the UK.
• Ability to be cleared through the Police Vetting system: Level 2 NPPV clearance.
• A DBS check is required for this post (PHL will undertake an initial check on appointment).
